ISO6937/2 Services in Internet
This homepage contains information about the project aimed at the practical implementation of ISO6937/2 standard in Internet applications, especially library services.
The ISO6937/2 project started in 1993 with the begining of the automation of Main Library of the University of Gdansk. After the initial market research it has been decided to ad
opt the system offered by VTLS. The same system is videly used in Europe. Finland for instance, adopted VTLS as a national standard for academic libraries.
As our library consists of many sites scattered along three cities: Gdansk, Sopot and
Gdynia the possibility of accessing the bibliographical data via Internet was (and still is) of the upmost importance. The other fact
or which is very importand is that we stock a great number of non-English titles so following the example of Finland we have decided to adopt ISO6937/2 standard as a base for internal coding of data records.
The Internet connection to VTLS system was at the time somewhat difficult. Majority of our users accessed the system not via dedicated graphics terminals and/or expensive workstations offered by VTLS but using standard text and DOS based packages. Telnet
being purely ASCII oriented did not allowed the user to view bibliographical records in their native multilingual form. Of course VTLS offered a number of national terminals but our aim was to allow the user to process all ISO6937/2 characters on screen (
and in print) at the same time yet using simple tools like DOS telnet.
As the project progressed we have managed to implement ISO6937/2 in a greater number of services. Our progress will be periodicaly reported.
